New flu vaccine offered this year

SANDUSKY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Flu season is right around the corner, which means local health departments are starting to stock up on vaccines.

This year, the Sandusky County Health Department is offering a new vaccine that they say is even stronger. The quadrivalent vaccine is being released for the first time this year.

Unlike the trivalent – the old vaccine – which protects against three strains of flu viruses, the quadrivalent will protect against four.

Health officials say the new vaccine is limited for now, and will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

"It's just going to be hit and miss if you're going to be able to get the quadrivalent," said Bethany Brown, director of nursing at the Sandusky County Health Department. "We could only get half of our order in quadrivalent."

The vaccine costs $25, and the first clinic in Sandusky County will be Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds' flower building.
