Mayoral candidate Lopez working with land bank program

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Is a candidate running for mayor in Toledo trying to cash in on the success of the Lucas County Land Bank program?

On Tuesday, a press conference was held at Buck Brothers Asphalt and Paving on Avondale. The land bank worked out a deal for the owner to acquire the property to expand his business and hire six additional employees.

During that event, Lucas County Auditor Anita Lopez announced through efforts between her office and the treasurer's office, she's been able to reduce the number of forfeited land sales, from twice per year down to once a year, and saving taxpayers an estimated $50,000.

That announcement comes exactly one week before the Toledo primary. When questioned about the timing of her announcement, Lopez responded:

"It's an example of collaboration, efficiency. This is work that's been taking place behind the scenes. We don't get to share with the public because we're more concerned about working. We're saving taxpayer dollars."

Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz says the deal with Buck Brothers is important because it has put an idle industrial property back into use and prevented another building from being demolished.
