New security measure in place for Ottawa Hills schools

OTTAWA HILLS, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Ottawa Hills school district has implemented a new buzz-in system at the school buildings for increased security.

Parents in the district say they appreciate the new system.

"You want your kids to be safe, especially with all the school shootings," said Nicole Dewalt, a parent.

District officials say that's exactly why they decided to move forward with the new system this year. After the Sandy Hook shooting, officials say they took a step back and evaluated their safety and security measures.

The new system requires everyone who enters one of the buildings to press a call button and be identified first. Visitors will be seen through a camera, and will be able to communicate with staff through a speaker and microphone.

Dewalt feels this measure is a step in the right direction.

"I think it just gives us an extra sense of security, because I think everybody's on guard," she said. "It's unfortunate that we have to be that way, but you just have to do preventative measures."

A second set of doors has been added to the office entrance off the parking lot at the elementary, and to the office entrance off Osborne at the high school.
