Children's Hospital plans expansion projects at Liberty Campus - News, Weather, Sports, Toledo, OH

Children's announces expansion plans in Liberty Twp.

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

Cincinnati Children's Hospital announced plans for two major expansion projects at its Liberty Campus in Butler County, scheduled to happen over the next 12 months.

The first is a $118 million facility which will house a proton therapy and research center for cancer treatment.

"A major advantage of proton therapy over other forms of treatment is its ability to deliver highly-focused radiation therapy to a tumor with remarkable precision," stated Children's Hospital in a release sent Tuesday.

They add this type of therapy avoids radiation exposure to healthy surrounding tissue in patients, which significantly reduces the risks for long-term complications.

Construction for the new facility is slated to begin before the end of 2013 and will take three years to complete.

Additionally, a fourth floor will be added to the existing three-story structure at the Liberty Campus and will hold 28 new pediatric inpatient beds. Officials say the bed expansion will serve children receiving proton therapy and other types of cancer care.

"This decision to add beds enables Cincinnati Children's to better serve this growing population area and offer more convenience for many families.  In addition, it will ease some of the pressure on our main campus, where patient volumes continue to grow year over year," Hospital representatives state.

Construction on the fourth floor will start during the winter of 2014 and be completed by summer of 2015. Officials estimate this addition will cost $44 million.

The Liberty Campus, located at the intersection of Interstate 75 and State Route 129 in Liberty Township, will continue to serve patients during this construction.
