TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Since launching its Facebook page four months ago, the Toledo Police Department has been leaving its mark on the social networking scene, even gaining more popularity than some bigger, notable departments in the nation.

The TPD may have more than 600 officers on the streets, but they have nearly 9,000 friends on the web. The numbers are phenomenal when compared to bigger departments.

As of Sept. 3, 2013:

-Toledo Police Department has nearly 9,000
-Detroit Police Department has around 8,200
-Seattle Police Department has nearly 6,700
-Cincinnati Police Department has just under 5,000
-Austin Police Department has around 4,100
-Denver Police Department has nearly 4,000
-Raleigh Police Department has around 3,100
-San Diego Police Department has around 2,500
-Pittsburgh Bureau of Police has nearly 2,000

Numbers show the TPD is winning in the friends department. According to TPD, they average 400 to 500 new friends a week.

If you've liked them on Facebook, you know they have a flair for balancing posts with serious information and witty, fun statuses.

Sgt. Kevin Braun, who is in charge of the Facebook page, says relatability is everything.

"We're human beings. We're not robots. We laugh. We cry. We have emotion just like everybody else. And there are some things that we put out there that are OK to laugh at. I think that if you get people engaged, and maybe they're smiling and having a good time while they're looking at your page, they are going to pay a little closer attention when you put the bad guy up there," explained Braun.

During a three-day period at the end of August, Toledo police were able to capture four suspects wanted for thefts.

This year's Race for the Cure in Findlay is taking place right in the middle of a September heat wave. Temperatures at race time will be in the 70s. By midday expect temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s under bright sunshine. This would be a hot and oppressive day right in the middle of summer, let alone in late September.  Be sure to prepare for the conditions by drinking plenty of fluids and considering wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
