BBB Alert: Facebook page “like” scams

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

If you use Facebook, you've probably "liked" a brand or company page in the past. Thousands of legitimate businesses use Facebook as a way to pass along information to customers, run contests and even give away free stuff. Unfortunately, scammers have started using the site as well.

The good news is this type of scam is unlikely to cost you any money, but it is aimed at making the scammers money. The crooks create a fraudulent Facebook page, then invent a fake contest or give-away to attract "likes."

In the most recent example, scammers created a fake page for Jet Blue airlines and promised a free vacation to one lucky person who "liked" the page. The scammers were hoping to get as many "likes" as possible, and then sell the page for a profit.

In another case, the phony page promised to donate $1 to a sick child for every "like."

The best way to avoid contributing to this type of scam is to be aware of the possibility. Check into pages before clicking "like." For example, the real Jet Blue page has more than 800,000 "likes." It's unlikely that a major national brand would only have a few hundred Facebook fans.
