OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, which means the end of vacation season at Maumee Bay State Park. Business owners say this year's business was mixed with highs and lows and their revenue dropped 30 percent from last year.

This summer season has not been kind to Joseph Taylor and his lakefront business Taylor Recreation, which usually rents 30 to 40 jet skis on a typical weekend. According to Taylor, algae, rain and cold weather are to blame for the slump in sales.

"We need to hit that 80-degree mark to get going out here and we didn't. A lot of July we were under 80 and I think that kind of hurt us," said Taylor.

The less-than-ideal weather put a damper on outdoor activities that bring in big bucks for the park lodge.

"If it's cold and wet, the golf course is down, there is very little action at the beaches, and not a lot of stuff outside," said Patrick Czarney, owner of the Maumee Bay State Park Lodge.

Despite the weather, business actually increased at the lodge. All 144 units were sold out Labor Day weekend.

Park visitors say there's no beating all the activities you can do at Maumee Bay.

"I try to [go to the Maumee Bay State Park] three or four times a summer. You can't beat this here," said Garret Lee.

With a few weeks of summer left, Taylor says he'll be open and hoping you'll catch the next wave on one of his jet skis.
