Demolition of Woodville Mall estimated at $1.6M

NORTHWOOD, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Woodville Mall has been declared a nuisance and ordered to be demolished. On Monday, the first court-ordered step was taken to knock down the vacant mall.

Many say it's bittersweet seeing a chain-linked fence surround what used to be a thriving mall, but the Woodville Mall hasn't been thriving for years. Just before Christmas in 2011, tenants were evicted because of a leaky roof, black mold and standing water.

A Wood County court declared the property a nuisance and ordered the property owner to put up a fence surrounding the entire property except Sears. The fence will remain up until the abatement process is finished.
People who used to shop there say it's sad to see the mall in such a state of disrepair.

"I was hoping they could repair it, but I heard there's a lot wrong with it, so they may as well tear it down. Preventing someone from coming in and torching it or something," said Donna Crowd.

The building, cement and asphalt must be removed by July 2014. Demolition is estimated to cost $1.6 million. Some say it's a small price to pay to remove an eyesore.
