WOODVILLE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Woodville park officials are cleaning up after strong winds knocked over a historic tree over the weekend.

It was an irreplaceable piece of history and the namesake of Woodville's Trail Marker Park.

The 200 year old hackberry tree was used by Native Americans to navigate shallow crossings in the Portage River.

Native Americans would bend the trees as saplings, creating an l- shape, and point them in the direction of the trail.

But the Woodville tree was no match for Mother Nature, despite being bolted together.

"They tried to preserve the tree. It's got bolts through it where they tried to hold it together and normal tree preservation, but there's only so much you can do," said Michael O'Connor, President of the Woodville Historical Society.

Historians say it was the last trail marker tree left in northwest Ohio.

But even without the historic tree, a trail marker remains, serving as a reminder of the history that happened on these park grounds.
