Bulldogs struggle to find offense in 21-3 loss to Oklahoma State

HOUSTON - The Bulldogs' disappointing end to last season rolled over into this year.

Mississippi State (0-1) fell 21-3 in a showcase at Reliant Stadium to 13th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys (1-0) in the 2013 AdvoCare Texas Kickoff game.

Mississippi State lost its top four receivers from a year ago - a season it went 1-5 in the final six games - and the offense was scarce Saturday.

OSU's offensive output bested the Bulldogs by nearly 100 yards, 432-333.

The Bulldogs struck first with sophomore Devon Bell nailing a 40-yard field goal on the first drive of the game, but they struggled for points thereafter.

MSU forced five punts in the first half, however, the Bulldogs could not capitalize on offense. They drove into OSU territory twice, but with those drives ended with an interception and a turnover on downs.

OSU quarterback J.W. Walsh scored on a 3-yard keeper to give the Cowboys a 7-3 lead with a little more than two minutes remaining in the first half.

The Bulldogs quickly had a chance to score and possibly take the lead but fell just yards short.

The Cowboys drove to the Bulldogs' 32 and set up for a 49-yard field goal with just seconds left. Nickoe Whitley blocked the kick, allowing Taveze Calhoun to return the ball. But he was stopped at the 9-yardline as the final seconds of the half closed.

On the Cowboys' first drive of the second half, running back Jeremy Smith punched in from one yard out to give Oklahoma State a 14-3 lead.

Smith struck again for a 20-yard score early in the fourth quarter.

Tyler Russell led the passing attack for MSU, going 10-for-16 for 133 yards, while senior LaDarius Perkins and sophomore Josh Robinson led the way on the ground with 50 and 48 yards running, respectively.
