TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

An effort by Toledo Public Schools is under way to bring students and senior citizens in the area together.

TPS is teaming up with local senior centers and the Area Office of Aging to bring seniors into local schools for everything from classes to sporting events and dances.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant says building strong relationships between the district and community is very important and this is one way to do it. He says they will work to bring senior citizens into history classes to talk about war, open school doors so they can use facilities for exercise, plus offer free admission to all high school sporting events.

It's a partnership they believe will benefit everyone involved.

"They're coming together on a common bond, and that's enrichment. So we look forward to that diversity of helping our students build somewhat of an experiential knowledge of what they get from these seniors, but more importantly, these seniors get an understanding of the digital age of today," explained Durant.

Durant says they're also going to try planning special events, such as a senior homecoming to bring everyone together outside normal school hours.

To get involved, a person must be at least 60 years old and live within the boundaries of the Toledo Public Schools District. Retired TPS employees of any age are also allowed to join.
