Grilled Bratwurst with Bavarian Style Kraut

Brats with Cider Braised Bavarian Kraut and Onions and Beer Mustard

Cider Braised Kraut


1 large onion sliced

2 tbls oil

2 small cans Bavarian style kraut (If not available substitute one large can kraut drained and rinsed plus

1 tbls sugar and 1 ½ tsp caraway seeds)

1 ½ cps hard cider

8 fresh bratwurst of choice


1st In a saucepan large enough to hold everything heat the oil and cook the onions till translucent

2nd Add the kraut, cider and brats and cook the brats about 15 minutes or till done and remove to cool

3rd Continue to cook the kraut till the liquid is mostly evaporated

Beer Mustard


1  cp ground mustard

1/2 cp brown sugar

1 tsp. salt

3 tbls. cider vinegar

3/4 cup stale beer (Preferably a light pilsner dark beer can overpower the flavor.)


Stir all in a small sauce pan and bring to a boil and remove from heat. Cool completely

The Sandwich!

1st  Heat kraut and hold

2nd Grill the cooked brats till hot and golden brown

3rd Prepare a bun (pretzel is nice) by slathering with the homemade mustard

4th Insert Brat and top with kraut
