East Toledo group striving for neighborhood change

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

‘Lead the change; be the change' is the philosophy of the group One Voice for East Toledo. Members say their part of the city is ignored by City Hall, and they plan to take things into their own hands.

Resident John Ackerman says he's tired of seeing east Toledo take a back seat to other parts of the city.

"East Toledo needs to be cleaned up. The houses need to be cleaned up, the alleys need to be cleaned up," he said.

Last January, One Voice committees were set up for safety, youth, housing and economic development. Members are identifying problems and solutions, and will take their findings to city leaders.

"We're going to go to the city and say, ‘Here's what we see. How can we work together to make that happen?'" said Jodi Gross, one of the founders of One Voice for East Toledo.

The group is sponsoring a ‘get involved in your neighborhood' event Sept. 14 in the Marina District. Residents, community leaders, and business owners are urged to attend.

"Find out what's happening and you can make a difference in your neighborhood," Gross said.
