Documenting harassment can help make a case

LORIS, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County Sheriff's Office says a Loris couple did the right thing by documenting their alleged harasser's texts and Facebook posts because the crime can be a difficult thing to prove.

Robert Johnson, 39, is accused of second degree harassment. If he's found guilty of this crime, Johnson may have to pay a fine, spend 30 days in jail and leave the Loris family alone.

"We have the right as a citizen not to be contacted, harassed, texted or called by anybody," says Sgt. Jeff Benton.

According to several police reports, Johnson allegedly posted scantily clad pictures of the victim on Facebook in June and on more than one occasion contacted the victim's husband and told him they had been sleeping together. The victim told Johnson to leave them alone, but he allegedly replied by cursing. The family then contacted the authorities.

"Harassment is something you have to show a pattern of," says Benton.

Police say there is a pattern. Johnson was allegedly seen sitting outside riding by the family's home on more than one occasion, and they showed police the numerous text messages he sent. The victim also tells WMBF News that Johnson tried to befriend their child on Facebook. The sheriff's office says it gets complaints everyday about harassment, but it's what you do with the information that matters the most.

"In order to get a warrant for harassment you have to show that it's happening over a period of time and happening multiple times," says Benton.

Robert Johnson is one of Horry County's Most Wanted and was last known to live on Log Cabin Road in Loris. If you know where he is, call 843-915-8347 or Horry County Dispatch at 843-248-1520.
