Maumee High students using smart phones to enhance curriculum

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Maumee High School students have new technology to use this year. A new policy allows students to bring in their own smart phone devices to be used alongside curriculum.

The devices are linked through the school's filtered network. Students are allowed to use them in the halls and cafeteria, but while in class, it's at the teacher's discretion.

"The reason we chose not to do a one-to-one program is because keeping up with the changing technology would antiquate the technology as soon as you hand them to the students," explained principal Matthew Dick.

The policy states that students must be on the school's network and the devices can only be used for school-related issues in class.

"One thing that I did with one of my classes was a very big geologic period research project. And the students were able to use their devices in class to complete the project and make a poster. It makes it a lot easier from a teacher standpoint because we don't have to rent the library or computer lab for it," said teacher Adam Russel.

This is the trial period, but if things go smoothly, this new policy could be implemented throughout the district.

Many students are excited to move forward with the latest technology at their fingertips.

"It's, like, a good change for the school. Just because it is keeping up with technology," said Julia Dumagall, a sophomore at Maumee High.
