History comes to life on 50th March on Washington anniversary

WASHINGTON D.C. (WFLX) - People across the nation are celebrate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's iconic "I have a Dream" speech.

It was on this week in 1963 when people from across the country made their way to hear that famous speech.

Among the 250,000 marchers was a South Florida man who is now telling students what it was like when he was their age. "Fifty years ago, seems like it was just yesterday, but here we are, today, 50 years later."

Dr. Walter Richardson spent the anniversary at Glades Central High School where he told students he was their age, 15 years old, when he attended the 1963 March on Washington.

In a room of 400 students, Richardson told them what it was like growing up in the South -- drinking from separate water fountains and being spat upon. "To put someone, who walked in the same place where MLK was 50 years ago and to put them in front of our students, it makes history come alive."

Elizabeth Zdrodowski is a teacher and librarian at the school. "This is just another way that we can reach out to our students and bring the words off of the history books and right in front of them in walking, talking form."

For sophomore Genese African, this experience has sparked her interest to learn more. "He expressed how he was 15. I'm 15 right now, and to know that he was there, trying to make a change, that inspires me to do the same."

African says 50 years from now, she plans on bringing her children to the 100th anniversary of the March on Washington.

    Another drug treatment center wants approval from the city, but is getting some push back from neighbors. This one is in west Toledo, on Sylvania Avenue right at the corner on Sylvania and Jackman. The vacant church could house a new drug treatment center.     Construction is now underway for one of the first medicinal marijuana facilities in the Gibsonburg area. The Standard Wellness Company was awarded one of Ohio's cultivation licenses for medicinal marijuana. Their location is in Gibsonburg, Ohio, as many local municipalities voted to keep facilities out, Gibsonburg wanted the industry.
