TPS parents worry about poor state report card

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

As Toledo Public Schools students prepare to head back to class Tuesday morning, there is excitement and worry about how the district is performing.

"They couldn't wait for school to start," said Janet Brodbeck of her two children. "I've never seen kids so happy for school to start!"

The state recently released report cards for Ohio schools. TPS received five "F"s, in areas including meeting academic indicators and four-year graduation rates.

Kala Lucas has three kids enrolled in TPS, and she's leery of the new grades.

"I worry a lot about it and I'm praying and hoping that they are able to recover in the areas where they're not the best at," Lucas said. "I'm hoping that they do that because the kids need it."

Interim Superintendent Romules Durant made his way through each of the elementary schools Monday night for open houses. He says he knows parents will hold district leaders and teachers accountable.

"You start looking at the positives, and now it's time to look at the challenges," Dr. Durant said. "We saw increases in our graduation rate, but obviously it didn't meet the benchmark, which we're going to strive to, and hopefully we're going to set a goal of above 70 percent coming this year."

Durant says there was also an "A" grade received for educating disabled students, and for the lowest-performing students. These are positive developments that project a better future and better numbers for these report cards.

This year's Race for the Cure in Findlay is taking place right in the middle of a September heat wave. Temperatures at race time will be in the 70s. By midday expect temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s under bright sunshine. This would be a hot and oppressive day right in the middle of summer, let alone in late September.  Be sure to prepare for the conditions by drinking plenty of fluids and considering wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
