Sandusky County gets air ambulance service

A life-saving service is touching down in Sandusky County, getting patients the help they need at a faster pace.

SANDUSKY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) - A life-saving service is touching down in Sandusky County, getting patients the help they need at a faster pace.

The time it takes to get from the scene of an emergency in Sandusky County to the hospital has been cut nearly in half thanks to a service offered through ProMedica Air. The hospital brought a new air ambulance to the county.

The newest ProMedica Air chopper is housed at Sandusky Regional Airport, where paramedics say they're on call around the clock.

"This helicopter is in operation 24/7, 365 days a year," said Bradley Periat, a flight paramedic.

Since bringing the helicopter to Sandusky this summer, Periat says they've been on multiple emergency flights where timing has been critical.

"There are a lot of things that are very time-sensitive, so the quickest we can get the patient to the level of care that they need, the best it's going to be for that patient," he said.

James Spralding works as a lineman at the airport, and says as a Sandusky County resident, he feels safe putting his family's lives in the paramedics' hands if needed.

"I've talked to quite a few of the flight crew, and they're definitely top-notch people," Spralding said. "I would definitely be proud to have them transport somebody."

In a statement from ProMedica, the mission of ProMedica Air is to "serve patients within the community, whether they are in a hospital or pre-hospital setting." Officials said, "ProMedica Air's continued focus is on providing safe, emergent, high-quality patient care when time is critical to survival."
