Historic bridge to be restored in Sandusky County

SANDUSKY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A piece of history in Sandusky County is getting a facelift.

The beaten path to Mull Covered Bridge on County Road 9 has been traveled since 1851. Decades-old love notes and graffiti now cover the structure, but it could be getting a makeover soon.

The Ohio Department of Transportation has awarded Sandusky County more than $285,000 in grant money to repair the bridge. County leaders want to make sure the bridge stays intact for centuries to come.

Jim Kanan has lived next to the bridge since 1988. He says preserving the historic landmark is a necessity at a time when many are disappearing.

"We just seem to be such a throw-away society," Kanan said. "There are wedding here, photo shoots for graduations, you know, a lot of different things. Yeah, it's definitely a good thing, money well spent."

The bridge is no longer open to traffic, but it can be toured on foot.
