TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The doors are opening Monday night at a number of Toledo Public Schools to give students and parents a chance to feel more prepared for the new school year.

There are a lot of fresh ideas coming into play this school year that starts Tuesday for TPS. One of them is having open houses before the first day of school.

Schedule of TPS Open Houses:

-Elementary Schools: Aug. 26 from 5:30 – 7 p.m.
-Bowsher High School: Aug. 29 from 6 - 7:30 p.m.
-Toledo Technology Academy: Sept. 3 from 6:30 - 8 p.m.
-Start High School: Sept. 5 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
-Scott High School: Sept. 11 from 5 - 7 p.m.
-Woodward High School: Sept. 11 from 6 - 8 p.m.
-Waite High School: Sept. 19 from 5 - 9 p.m.

At Arlington Elementary School, kids will get to check out the new wing of their building for the first time.

"We want parents, and kids, and the community to know that we are building the future here," said Melisa Viers, intervention specialist at TPS.

Arlington has been a school full of students eager to learn. So portable classrooms were put on the grounds for sixth through eighth-grade students. A new school year will bring a new wing with six new classrooms and plenty of upgrades.

"We have restrooms. They don't have to come in from outside. We have technology. All the classrooms have been equipped with the projectors in the ceilings. They also have smart boards," said Lori Reffert, principal at Arlington Elementary School. "They feel like they are part of the building."

Teachers got to move into their new classrooms Thursday. On Monday, they taped and stapled the finishing touches before welcoming their students for a sneak peek.

"It's a very laid back opportunity for students to come in and meet all the staff members, from the specialists, to the principal, to the assistant principal, to the classroom teachers, and get a feel for the building before the first day of school," said Reffert.

Now that the building is complete and the bell is set to ring, district officials say it's time to work on building the foundation for a productive school year.
