South Toledo hotel turned into thriving retirement community

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

In 1968, it opened as a Holiday Inn Hotel on Reynolds Road in south Toledo.

Flash forward to today.

It's been renovated and re-named Genesis Village.

Two developers put $6 million into the building over a 7 month period and turned it into a senior apartment complex.

There are 138 one and two bedroom apartments.

Monthly rent begins at $1500.

In recent years, the building has become a blighted eyesore along the Reynolds Road corridor.

"Well, 3 years ago it was a rundown hotel about two months away from being a parking lot," said developer Jim Oedy, "the one option we saw was to turn it into what you see today."

And what you see is an apartment complex developers say is more like an all-inclusive Florida resort.

Food served in a dining room and breakfast cafe is prepared by a chef.

There is also a fireside lounge and library, sunny atrium, pool, fitness center and beauty shop.

Utilities, cable and Internet hook ups are also included in the rent.

"A lot of seniors who go into retirement centers are looking for a place with a lot of amenities," said Mr. Oedy, "they just don't want to sit in a room, read and watch TV."

One of those seniors is 81 year old Peg Fye.

She says Genesis Village has everything her old retirement apartment complex lacked.

"The food, the people, the fun I'm having," said Ms. Fye.

Other seniors apparently want to have fun too.

Genesis Village is filling up.

Developers are considering two more similar projects in the next five years.
