Eight fire crews extinguish fire at old Highland school

HILLSBORO, OH (FOX19) -

Multiple fire crews extinguished a fire that engulfed an old Hillsboro school early Sunday evening.

At least eight fire departments in two neighboring counties collaborated to assist the Hillsboro Fire Department combat a fire that began after 6:00 p.m. on Walnut Street at the old Webster School.

Officials say that the fire began in a stairwell and witnesses saw smoke coming from a window. The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes of its original start and no one was in the building. 

According to officials, the school was shut down several years ago and was used for several different projects since its official closing.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
