COVINGTON, KENTUCKY (FOX19) -

The City of Covington Finance Director accused of misappropriation of city funds, which could be in excess of $300,000, was ousted from office Tuesday.

Covington City Commissioners voted unanimously to fire Robert 'Bob' Due, 63, following his arrest.

City Manager Larry Klein announced details of the investigation last Friday during a press conference at Covington City Hall.

According to Klein, money was allegedly transferred from the City of Covington into Due's bank account dating back to 2010. Klein says there were multiple incidents of about $8,000-$10,000 per transaction.

Klein says it was brought to his attention on Thursday when other city workers came to him with the allegations. They said it appeared there were irregularities in the processing of checks and funds and immediately told administration.

"We are angry. We are upset. We are sad for everyone involved for our family here at city hall. For our citizens, there are few crimes worse in my opinion than the abuse of public trust, the tax dollars, the hard earned tax dollars," said Klein.

During an interview with FOX19 in 2010, Due addressed the Covington's budget issues.

"This will be a ongoing process where we will fine tune our revenue projections, but that this point, we are seeing less revenue next year then we are experiencing this year," he said.

It appears Due is the only person involved in the investigation. He is currently being interviewed by the Commonwealth Attorney's Office.

Staff Accountant Jerome Heist will serve as interim finance director. Covington says they do have a bond in effect that may help them recover the funds Due is accused of taking.

Due is a Covington native and has been with the city since 1999.

He's been charged with theft by unlawful taking of over $10,000, unlawful access to a computer, official misconduct and criminal possession of forged instruments. He could face up to 20 years in prison.

Due posted a $10,000 bond and has been released until his next court appearance on September 3.
