Bus carrying US troops crashes in Mooresville, 29 injured

MOORESVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

Emergency crews say a bus of US Army Reserve soldiers returning from training crashed in Mooresville, injuring 29 people.

The incident was reported Friday just before 3 p.m. at Oak Meadow Road and Highway 150. The bus was transporting troops from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport to Salisbury.

The Army Reserve members are from the 991st Transportation Company based in Salisbury. They were returning after two weeks of training.

Officials said the bus slowed for turning traffic, slid to the right and ran off the road.

Emergency crews said 29 people were injured. Of those, 14 were taken to local hospitals.

Brittney Stevens' husband, Michael was one of them. She recalls the frantic text message she got from her husband, saying he'd been in an accident.

"I hurried up and called him," she said. "I could tell he was very shaken up."

Instead of meeting him at the base in Salisbury with the welcome home balloons in the back of her car, she raced to the scene of the accident instead.

"He said it flipped like three or four times," she recalled. "And it was just laying there. And they let me through cause I was his wife so I was able to talk to him before he got sent to the hospital."

One of those 14 was airlifted to Lake Norman Regional Medical. That soldier was in stable condition as of 9:30 p.m., officials said.

The other 13 that were taken to local hospitals were released Friday night. Fourteen of the 29 injured were treated and released on scene.

Officials on scene said the bus driver is being charged with failure to maintain lane control.

The motor coaches are from Holiday Tours based out of Randolph County. The company says it is cooperating with investigators.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round. They will play the winner of the Fort Wayne and ...
