Pink fire trucks raise awareness in Tiffin

TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A group touring 144 cities in 145 days in pink fire trucks made a stop in Tiffin Thursday.

The "Pink Heals" tour helps communities raise awareness and support for keeping locally-raised cancer research dollars in the community.

Founded in 2007, Pink Heals wants to change American healthcare by redirecting volunteer dollars from national groups to local communities. So far, they have traveled over 240,000 miles to 340 cities.

T-shirt sales help fund the gas costs for the trucks, and inside is material to educate leaders and residents on how to start up local foundations.

The pink truck can be signed by anyone who has been affected by cancer. Group founder Dave Graybill says, ultimately, the focus needs to be on the individuals, not the cause.

"The idea is we need to put people before causes," he said. "There's too many causes, too many divisions. There's only one ‘woman' in this country, and if you celebrate ‘her' based on the love you have for your mother, we begin to come back to each other and we begin to trust our local leaders."

The tour's presence in town prompted a local cancer charity dinner to benefit the Seneca County FACT and the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
