Students learning in mobile units at a Perrysburg elementary this year

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Students head back to class Monday at Frank Elementary School in Perrysburg, and fifth-graders are in for some big changes. They're going to be learning their lessons in mobile classrooms.

That's because enrollment at Frank has jumped by 35 students. The units will lower the student-teacher ratio, which is already high.

"We would be borrowing space on top of each other. We would probably have people filtering in the library, multiple groups of students, and it would be very congested," said Principal Brent Swartzmiller.

There are three mobile units with two classrooms in each one. They come from Sylvania Schools and have been retro-fitted to accommodate the students at Frank.

Landscaping helps the units fit in with the rest of the Frank campus.

"They'll still be in the bigger group building for lunch, still part of assemblies. It's just that they'll have their own work area and as the elder statesmen in the school, sometimes that's a perk," Swartzmiller said.

He added that the Perrysburg School District is expanding at a rate that doesn't fit its current size. Three out of four elementary schools have mobile classrooms.

Some people in the district speculate that the long-term solution to overcrowding would be the construction of a new school building, but that would require voters' approval of a levy.
