TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The driver of a car that crashed head-on with a motorcyclist fled the scene of a fatal accident, only to be arrested later.

The accident happened just after 11 p.m. Wednesday near Douglas and Ida roads in west Toledo. Police say 32-year-old motorcyclist Jason Alexander was speeding northbound when 39-year-old David Robinson Sr. was driving a Buick LeSabre and went left of center, crashing into him. Police say Alexander was ejected from his motorcycle, struck the windshield and was catapulted into the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Toledo fire personnel.

Neighbors that heard the crash say they ran out of their homes and saw the motorcycle in flames.

Police say Robinson took off on foot and was later arrested near Miracle Mile Shopping Center on Laskey Road. He was given a BAC test and then taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center for a blood sample. He was later released.

Robinson has been charged with driving with a suspended license and failure to stop after an accident. Sgt. Joe Heffernan says felony charges will be presented to the grand jury once all the evidence has been processed.

"It appears as though several factors may have been involved in this accident. Alcohol may have been a factor. There may have been other substance abuses that may have been a factor. These are all things that we have to verify before we go ahead with the charges," explained Heffernan.

According to police, Robinson has had multiple run-ins with the law, including various drinking, drug and traffic offenses.

The crash remains under investigation. Douglas was closed for more than four hours while crews worked to clean debris and piece together what happened.
