TPS begin aggressive levy campaign

At the campaign kickoff. At the campaign kickoff.
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo school leaders are calling it the most aggressive levy campaign ever. They teamed up with dozens of volunteers Wednesday to start the fight to get a levy renewed by voters.

Toledo Public Schools unveiled a new sign for the campaign. It reads, "For TPS – A new beginning…Not a new tax."

That's also the theme of the campaign that was unveiled Wednesday night, when parents and even students showed they're united to reverse the trend of levies failing at the polls.

Two co-chairs were named: Rhonda Sewell of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library System and Denny Johnson, president of Brooks Insurance.

"I can tell you three things: We are going to work together, we are going to get the word out, and we are going to win," Sewell said.

Johnson promised to get businesses behind the levy.

"I can tell you that schools are part of the economic backbone of a community, and specifically our community," he said. "Good schools protect property values. Good schools help create good jobs."

School board member Lisa Sobecki said $7 million in cuts might have to be made if this renewal levy fails in November.

This was the first time a levy campaign kickoff was followed by a large brainstorming session. Fifty volunteers joined the levy committee to begin to develop strategies.

Today is a prime example of individuals getting behind education and saying, ‘We're here to serve. What role can we play?'" said Interim Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant.

TPS leaders say this is also the earliest they've ever launched a renewal levy campaign.
