OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) - School is back in session for Oregon students, and Wednesday was the first day of school for new Superintendent Dr. Lonny Rivera, too.

Rivera is an Oregon native, a Clay High School graduate, and a former Coy Elementary principal, so walking the Oregon halls is nothing new for him. But Rivera said he was still anxious and excited.

"I didn't sleep much last night," he said. "I feel really good about our start. You know, of course, there's going to be issues, small issues, and we deal through those."

One hard-hitting issue that has plagued the district in recent months is the case against former Clay Athletic Trainer Melinda Rober, who is accused of having sexual relations with two high school students.

"We want to make sure that everybody knows that those types of issues we will be swift in dealing with, and make sure that the community trust is here," Rivera said.

Rivera says under his administration the culture is going to be the main focus, ensuring parents that their children are leaning and feeling at home away from home when they walk through the school doors.

"We want to make sure that we gear them up for a life of being very productive in college or career or whatever they choose to do," he said.
