Adrian Maples ready for football season

ADRIAN, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Although the Adrian Maples didn't make it to the postseason for the first time in a decade, they're ready to put the past behind them.

One could make the argument that it's always a rebuilding year for high school coaches. Players come in. They go out. Only your system remains.

"We've only got a handful of returning players back, and we're focused on paying attention to the detail," said head coach Phil Jacobs.

Jacobs certainly has his work cut out for him. His team went 3 and 6 last year - the worst season in 14 years. On top of that, only three starters return from both sides of the football.

"Last year is last year. We're putting that year behind us. This year's a new year," said Jacobs.

This year, the team has a new quarterback and some new wide receivers. They may be green, but they're looking to prove they belong.

"I think we will take care of business. We have a lot of young guys capable of getting the job done," said quarterback Jeff Marvin.

Technically, they're more inexperienced than young. With 17 seniors, that's two more than they had last year.

It's guys like Zeb Ruppel and Daniel Small who feel they've got to take more of a leadership role now.

"We didn't really win a lot of games, which that gives me motivation to come out and work harder this year and push the team," said safety Small," because I know that we can get out and possibly go to states this year."

Adrian starts its season against the Airport Jets Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at Airport High School in Carleton, MI.
