Oregon students can expect some bussing changes

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Summer vacation is officially over for students in Oregon, but there is concern among some parents about new bus schedules.

School starts this week for Oregon Schools, and school leaders admit bussing will not be perfect.

Last year, April Andrus' two sons got on the bus at 8 and 8:30 in the morning. This year, thanks to the reconfiguration of schools, they'll both get on at 6:45 – a huge change.

"An hour on the bus for anybody is going to be hard," said Andrus. "I remember being picked up at 7 and I thought that was early. 6:45 is going to be early."

Administrators said they're doing some last-minute tweaking to make sure things run smoothly on Wednesday, the first day of school. The district says it will strictly stick to the policy that no child will ride the bus longer than one hour.

"I'm hoping there's not too many at that hour, but we do have some, and we're making adjustments as we speak," said Assistant Superintendent Hal Gregory. "We're working through stuff every day to try to get those down."

School will start at 7:40 a.m. at Eisenhower Intermediate and Fassett Junior High.

"It's going to be a work in progress, and we just ask for patience on this whole process," said Superintendent Dr. Lonny Rivera. "We're going to have all hands on deck with our staff, making sure that the kids have as little anxiety as possible."

There will also be bus transfers at Eisenhower and Fassett, but they will have extra staff to help kids get where they need to go.
