Tax incentive encourages employers to pay more in Tiffin

TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Tiffin leaders are working to bring more jobs with better pay to residents. The city is offering a new incentive to businesses looking to hire.

Fast food chains and big corporations are what leaders in Tiffin say the area needs more of, and they are willing to pay for it.

"We need a way to set Tiffin off from other communities in Ohio," said Mayor Aaron Montz.

Montz wants business owners to know it pays to pay well in the City of Tiffin. For manufacturers willing to pay employees 50 percent more than minimum wage, they'll receive 50 percent of the income tax they pay back in the form of a rebate check.

Montz says this program benefits businesses and workers.

"Seneca County and the City of Tiffin still has an unemployment rate that's in the high sevens," Montz said. "We need to get the rate down. If more jobs are generated, it's going to go a long way to providing a good living wage for those people who may be unemployed or maybe under-employed."

The rebate incentive is mainly targeting big business, but even small-business owners like John Reino, owner of Reino's Pizza and Pasta, say paying more than minimum wage shouldn't be a problem, and he can see the benefit.

"I pay some people pretty close to that, anyway – 10-11 bucks an hour, and you get a rebate, so yeah, that would be an incentive," he said.

Mayor Montz says businesses who decide to apply for the Job Creation Income Tax Credit could use it for up to five years, and that could change if the program is a success.
