Northwood to put levy on ballot for new school

A new $33 million school could be coming to Northwood.

NORTHWOOD, OH (Toledo News Now) - Anew $33 million school could be coming to Northwood.

Schoolofficials have decided where they want to build the new school, but they willneed the support of voters this November.

A4.9 mill levy will be on the November ballot to help fund the new school. Thestate is covering a portion of the project – they will pay $11 million, leavingthe community to come up with the rest.

Parentssay it's time for a change. Northwood High School is the newest building in thedistrict, and it's 50 years old.

"Mymom attended this school when she was in high school," said Jennifer Puariea, aNorthwood parent. "I attended this school when I was in high school, and nowthey've got the seventh and eighth-graders with the ninth throughtwelfth-graders. They definitely need the space."

Thenew school would be built in the same lot as the current one. It's estimated tobe 130,000 square feet. Parents say more space means more lockers, which wouldease the load students have to carry.

"[There's]not enough lockers," Puariea said. "They have to carry all their booksthroughout the day with them."

Thelevy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $171 each year.Parents say it's worth it to get their kids into a more modern school.
