Lucas County dispatchers take to the road for hands-on training

LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Lucas County Sheriff John Tharp is requiring a new type of training for his employees. It will require them to get hands- and ears-on.

The training will take emergency dispatchers out of the Emergency Services Center and on the road, to give them more perspective and make response times faster.

"For them to see it, to touch it, to feel it, to actually be able to go into those communities, to know where they're dispatching the patrol officers to," said Tharp.

Last week, dispatchers started stepping away from their desks and into squad cars with officers.

"We're supposed to be all on the same team here," said Sgt. Robb Ellis. "Sometimes we get into the idea that it's us and them. This way, it gives an opportunity to get the dispatchers out of the building, and just actually see the calls coming in our end."

Sheriff Tharp says the deputies will also get in the dispatchers' seats to see how they work. He says this simple step to get more context and understanding is invaluable – it will save lives by making response times faster, and protect officers and the community.

"Every call is different," Sgt. Ellis said. "There's not one that you can say is all textbook and everything. It's all variable."

Ellis says this hands-on approach is new and welcomed.

It will take about a month to train everyone.
