Police: Use caution as students return to school

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Sylvania Police want motorists to use extra caution as students head back to school.

Police say for parents, having their students' route to school mapped out each year is very important. That's especially true this year, with construction on Monroe Street and the Erie Street Bridge.

"We're concerned that kids have a safe route to school," said Captain Rick Schnoor. "It's something parents want to do ahead of time: Map out a safe route to school and go ahead and do a dry run. Try out that route and make sure it's going to work for your kids."

Schnoor says the death of a student struck by an SUV two years ago still weighs heavily on the department's mind. He says this year, even more officers will be patrolling the streets the first few weeks of school.

Work on the Erie Street Bridge and Monroe Street, just west of Maplewood Elementary and Northview High School, will continue for at least three more weeks.
