Perrysburg Twp Police bike unit returns

Anew set of wheels is coming to the Perrysburg Township Police Department. They'rebringing back their bike unit after more than 19 years.

Inorder to make the bike patrol unit as effective as possible, officers will bemounting bicycles directly onto the back of their cruisers. That way, they cancover all 55 miles of the township with ease.

Thepolice are getting two bikes, and the unit will begin patrolling next month. They say they will target commercial areas to keep a closer eye on crime.

"Wecan get in places that cars can't," said Deputy Chief Mike Gilmore. "You canuse stealth and do all kinds of things with a bike that we're kind of excitedabout."

Gilmorewas on the Toledo Police bike patrol for six years. He says officers on bikesare more approachable.

Residentsin the township agree. They say with recent growth in the township, morepatrols are needed.

"Thetownship is growing," said Rodney Chidester. "It's getting a lot busier andthere are more people, a lot more traffic."

Gilmoresays more people can mean more crime, especially on busy shopping days.

"Thanksgiving, weather permitting, is a huge shopping day," Gilmore said. "It's hard for someof our vehicles to get in and out of these parking lots, and it would be niceto deploy bikes in that area on that particular day."

Thebike unit will operate on a part-time basis, year round, weather permitting.
