Five Points Biergarten helps beautify community

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Once a month, people flock to a new spot in Walnut Hills called the Five Points Biergarten, a redevelopment project that is bringing a community together.

After cleaning up the space off of Gilbert Avenue, the area nearly looks brand new.  It is all part of a bigger idea of redevelopment through the Walnut Hills business district.

"We would consider this sort of a celebration of a lot of hard work.  This is a very unique area in the community, said Kathy Gibbons, a board member of the Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation.

But the cleaning doesn't stop there.

Those volunteers branch out and clean up the areas around Gilbert Avenue and McMillan Street.

"It's part of a larger strategy of beautifying, creating a more safe business district and allowing businesses and the community to give back and help with part of that revitalization," said Carla Walker, business district coordinator at the Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation.

To help the bigger picture move forward, other efforts include building façade upgrades, planting flowers and a new safety strategy.  In the last few months, some new businesses have moved into the area.  To keep them thriving, the plan is to fix up existing spaces around them.

"What we're hoping to do is look at some of the vacant storefront properties, build them out and provide a space for new businesses to come in and thrive in Walnut Hills," added Walker.

This revamped piece of land known as the Five Points Biergarten is now a driving force for the rest of the neighborhood and its future.

"We do consider this a catalyst for further development, and also to support existing businesses and to bring people into this business district," added Gibbons.

The fifth, and final, biergarten in this series is set for September 15 with a volunteer clean-up day the day before.
