Residents bothered by foul smell in west Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A foul odor has some people fed up in west Toledo.

Wendy Rieff has lived in the Westbrook mobile home park on Angola Road for three years. She says every year, spring through summer, the air smells like rotten eggs thanks to her neighbor, the CYO Athletic Complex.

Rieff says when the well water is used to water the fields there, the wind blows fumes into the neighborhood.

"I have asthma, so it wakes me up and I can't breathe," she said. "It makes me very nauseated and ill. I have thrown up from it."

She says she's reached out to the Catholic Diocese of Toledo, the city, and the Ohio EPA, and she's hoping for some sort of resolution.

"It's just something we are forced to deal with, and I feel my rights are being violated. I have the right to breathe fresh air," she said.

CYO Athletics Director Jeff Mielcarek says they've looked into solutions and will continue to look, but when it comes down to it, it's costly to make the change from well water to city water.

"Our goal is to be a great neighbor, and we've really tried hard," he said. "We've reached out to neighbors; we've met with neighborhood groups about many different issues, both good and bad."
