National Tractor Pulling Championship revs up in Bowling Green

(Toledo News Now) -

The 4th annual National Tractor Pulling Championship kicks off at the Wood County Fair Grounds in Bowling Green this weekend!

Hotels and restaurants are packed, and some carry outs have run out of beer. That can only mean one thing: The National Tractor Pulling Championships are back in town.

Sixty thousand fans have pulled into Bowling Green to watch the big boys and a few girls throw their weight around, with $150,000 in prize money.

When the drivers go the full 300 feet down the dusty, dirt track, the announcer yells, "Full Pull!" and the crowd goes wild.

"Forty seven years ago, this is where it started," said event official Dave Schultz. "There were little fair pulls, but they decided to sanction it and put it together, and this is where it started."

Bobbie Barbee is a puller from Tennessee. Her rig is called ‘Willie Makit.'

Bobbie is a rookie on the pulling circuit and loves those words, 'full pull.'

"The adrenaline rush. I love it," she said. "It's just fun. We look forward to it."

And so do the fans.

It's John Deere vs. Massey Ferguson vs. International Harvester.

If you go, take plenty of ear protection.

"People. Horsepower. It's just a great time," said Rick Wettsel.

"I love it," added his wife Louann. "The noise, the smell. It's just a fantastic time."

Every August,  all you have to do is come to the Wood County Fairgrounds to see, hear and smell why Bowling Green's nickname is 'Pulltown.'

A variety of events are scheduled throughout the weekend. For a list of events
