Fracking drill operating in Lucas County

BERKEY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A fracking drill is now in operation in Lucas County.

The drill was set up at the corner of Sylvania/Metamora and Lathrop roads in Berkey, and not everyone is happy to see it.

"My concern – number one – the lack of oversight and information given to the citizens," said Penny Levine, who is running for Sylvania Township Trustee.

Levine learned of the drilling Wednesday night at a Sierra Club meeting. The operation is run by Savoy Energy out of Traverse City, MI. Property owners have given the company permission to drill. Paperwork shows a permit approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Levine is worried similar rigs could pop up in her jurisdiction.

"They do not have to inform anyone, especially property owners and citizens that they are proposing to drill," she said.

Fracking uses pressurized liquid to break apart layers of rock, unlocking deposits of oil and natural gas. Critics say it's an environmental disaster waiting to happen, but not everyone is worried.

"I don't mind it. I just hope they find what they're looking for," said Charlie Behrman, who lives across the street from the fracking site. "All they're doing is drilling a hole."
