Park director borrowed $2,500 from Olander Park

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

OlanderPark Director Gary Madrzykowski has resigned after being confronted aboutborrowing more than $2,000 from the park organization.

Parkcommissioners say they know of at least five instances where the directorinappropriately borrowed money. They say in one case, Madrzykowski wrote acheck to himself from the park system for $2,500. He is also accused of takingsmaller amounts from the cash register or office and leaving ‘IOU' notes.

"It'spublic money. It belongs to the park, so I think that was wrong for him to dothat," said Ben Rutherford, a park visitor.

Boardmembers say the money was always repaid a day or two later, but they sayMadrzykowski had no authority to borrow it. Visitors like Rutherford agreed.

"Eventhough he paid it back, he wasn't supposed to take it in the first place," hesaid. "It set a bad example for the people who work here, especially the highschool students."

Otherssay they think the director deserves a second chance.

"It'seasy to fire somebody, but it's also very hard to obtain someone with hisexperience and what he's done for the system," said Tony Gerrish, anothervisitor.

Boardmembers say they don't plan to press charges against Madrzykowski, and theywill begin their search for a new park director immediately.
