School bus safety for children and parents

Hundreds of school buses will start hitting the roads to take children to their classes. That's why it is important for children and parents to know school bus safety.

ROSSFORD, OHIO (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - Hundreds of school buses will start hitting the roads to take children to their classes. That's why it is important for children and parents to know school bus safety.

Toledo News Now's Steven Jackson was able to talk with Rossford School District's Transportation Director Jeff Culler on what students and parents need to know.

Here is how the bus stop works:

  • As the bus is approaching the bus stop, the bus driver will turn on their flashing yellow lights 300 feet before the stop.
  • Once the lights are activated, the bus will come to a complete stop. The bus driver will put the emergency brakes on, put the bus in natural, and open the door.
  • Once the door has been opened, the red lights will come on in the school bus and the stop sign will come out. The driver will signal students with hand motions when it is okay to get on the bus.
  • Anytime students hear the horn of the bus, that means that there is danger. Students should stop what they are doing and look for danger.
