(WMC-TV) - Ford Road Elementary's stands by their new motto, "No excuses for excellence". The school has significantly improved on student's test scores.

The second week of school at Ford Road Elementary in South Memphis sits at full session, and the young learners already have momentum behind them.

"I like my teachers. I like my principal," said fourth grade student Jordan Reed.

Jordan is part of a new future at Ford Road. It is one of 69 schools classified as an under-performing school. Though, instead of being turned over to the state's achievement school district, it was placed in Shelby County Schools' Innovation Zone. Now they are using a state model to turn things around on their own.

And it is working.

"Total difference as a transition from that first year to the last three years," said Jordan's dad, Khari Reed.

Reed is happy even though he thought about pulling his son out of the once suffering school.

Now principal Antonio Burt is naming off the school's accolades.

"If you are looking at data specifically, in one year we had a 20.2 percent gain in math, a 26 percent gain in science, and a 6.6 gain in reading [and] language arts," said Burt.

The school has a shared goal of raising student achievement.

Burt goes into the classrooms and observes instruction and provides high quality feedback. He says giving teachers all the resources they need has helped improve the scores.
