TPD testing out new cameras

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Some Toledo Police officers have been wearing body cameras around town, and soon, there could be more.

The cameras were first put to use about three months ago on the helmets of the motorcycle unit. The department just got their hands on a newer model of the cameras. There are no wires and more flexibility, which will hopefully mean better outcomes for policing.

"We want to get the best tool for our officers to work on the streets with," said Lt. Mark King. "It's as simple as that."

Two officers volunteered to test out the new equipment for a 30-day run, starting Tuesday.

"We'll capture a whole lot more with this, because about 70 percent of our action is away from the patrol car," King said. "So that'll give us a good gauge of how these things work with shift officers actually on the street, going to calls and talking to people, even in their homes."

Lt. King says the new models will be more user-friendly, and a better price - $299 instead of $1,200. If the testing goes well, the chief would like to have a camera on every patrol officer.
