SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Just three years after winning a state title, the Southview Cougars stumbled against St. Francis.

That game set the tone for last season. The Cougars were six and four, and missed the playoffs. So during practices this year, there's a sense of urgency and focus.

"We're definitely a lot more hungry," said Ryan Stout. "We're not used to winning only six games, and not making the playoffs. Coach Mayzes is not used to that, either. So, I mean, we definitely got our act together. We really focused hard on what we're doing, and we're definitely improving."

Southview's rematch against St. Francis, the first week of the season, can't come soon enough.

"We've been having a lot of…alumni players coming out and helping us prepare," said JJ Pinckney. "Coming out here, maybe two times a week and just doing some drills, and working on things that, you know, we fell short of last year."

Pinckney is among several playmakers with speed, along with Nate Hall, Malcolm Johnson, and others, making it an easier transition for the new quarterback.

"We are blessed with wide receivers and running back-type people, there's no doubt about it," said Coach Jim Mayzes. "Where we're struggling, is having enough people at the line of scrimmage. We've got some real good ones, but we don't have very many of them."
