Auburn officials put up wires to temporarily replace Toomer's oaks

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

An old tradition is returning to the Plains, but in a new way. Auburn fans will not be able to roll wires at Toomer's Corner after a big win.

The wires were installed Tuesday at the historic corner as a temporary replacement to the iconic Toomer's oaks.

The trees, poisoned by Harvey Updyke, were cut down in April after numerous attempts to save them failed.

Updyke pleaded guilty to poisoning the oaks and was sentenced to three years in jail. He was released in June after serving 76 days.

The wires will be replaced with newly planted oaks in 2014.
