I-80 crackdown considered a success

(Toledo News Now) -

An 8-day nationwide crackdown on Turnpike drivers is being considered a success.

From New Jersey to California, troopers on I-80 stepped up their enforcement to prevent speeding, impaired driving and aggressive driving. Lt. William Bowers, with the Toledo post of OHSP, says they used tactics they use on a daily basis to look for distracted drivers.

Their goal was to have a zero-fatality rate from July 24-31. Unfortunately, that did not happen. There were two deaths nationwide, one of them in Sandusky. But Lt. Bowers says the crackdown is still being considered a huge success.

"When you figure the number of fatalities that happen across the U.S. every day, let alone just Ohio, it's pretty amazing that there was only two fatalities on a road that stretched from California to New Jersey," Bowers said.

Bowers also said there were a few DUIs issued in northwest Ohio, something that doesn't occur often on the Turnpike.

The crackdown was funded by federal grants.
