Rossford group wants TARTA decision on ballot

First it was Perrysburg, now Rossford residents want to be able to decide if the city stays in or opts out of TARTA services.

Rossford city council voted to keep TARTA in June, but a group of residents want the voters to decide, so they started Citizens Choice. The group has gathered enough signatures on a petition to put the issue on the November ballot.

Christopher Kelly takes the bus from Toledo into Rossford every day. Without it, he says he wouldn't be able to get to work.

"It would devastate my family tremendously," Kelly said. "I work every day, Monday through Friday, and I depend on this bus until I get a car. Basically, it would hurt a lot. We really need this."

But the members of Citizens Choice say the decision should lie with the voters.

"The citizens are the ones that support TARTA through their tax dollars," said Robert Densic, secretary of the group. "They are also the ones that reap the benefits from it…They're the ones that should make the decision."

The mayor says TARTA is an important part of the community. He says it allows residents like Kelly the ability to get around, and it allows the city to receive extra consideration for certain public grants. They receive money back for transportation improvements.

Citizens Choice is not for or against TARTA, they are just advocating the community's right to vote on the issue.

"The committee's focus is not what should be the end result, what should be public transportation in Rossford, of if there should be public transportation in Rossford," Densic said. "The committee's focus is citizens. This is [their] choice to make, and we want to make certain that they have that choice."
