Mexican-American Festival ready to go in Perrysburg Heights

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Perrysburg Heights Community Center has been the center ofcontroversy lately. The cash-stripped center almost had to cancel theMexican-American Festival, its biggest fundraiser of the year, but it was savedjust in time.

After almost 20 years, the South of the Border Festival will continue, this time with its original name: The Mexican-American Festival.

The festival almost didn't happen after rumors were spread that it wascanceled, when it never was.

"We weren't going to let it go," said Festival Coordinator Jason Craig.

Tickets are now being sorted for this weekend's free family festival.More than 1,000 people are expected to fill the parking lot for dancing andgames. Money generated from the festival goes toward local non-profits and tohelp the community center continue to provide tutoring for children.

"It gives kids a chance, let them know there's something more to lifethan just this neighborhood and just the opportunities they provide," Craigsaid. "There is a whole world of opportunity for them to explore."

Board members were recently faced with how to stretch a $20,000 budgetfor the rest of the year. Now things are looking up. They have received 30in-kind donations and sponsorships for the festival.

"There's no excuse not to sacrifice a little bit to make everythingaround you better," Craig said.
