New charter school ready to open in west Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo's newest charter school is preparing to open.

It's called Discovery Academy and is located on the Sisters of Notre Dame campus in west Toledo, in the former Ladyfield School building.

The goal of the Discovery Academy is to enroll 20 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. So far, 30 kids have enrolled.

The academy will offer a technology-driven curriculum.

"We believe the world is going the way of technology," said Principal Noah Campbell. "Kids as young as nine months old are using the iPhone and iPads, and we want to make sure our kids, no matter what background they come from, have the opportunities to get that technology in their hands and learn from doing in our classroom."

Discovery Academy is a public institution, has no tuition and is not part of a voucher system. State funding is transferred to a charter school for every student enrolled, which hurts public schools and enrollment.

"I don't view this as a turf war with Toledo Public Schools or Washington Local. We all want the same thing, what's best for the kids and providing a public education," Campbell said.

Melissa Wade is considering enrolling her twins at Discovery Academy. She's been told class size will be smaller and that's appealing.

"I like the small family feeling, and that attention can be brought to each student and their own individual needs," she said.

The Toledo market is saturated with charter schools. Right now the goal of the Discovery Academy staff is to get parents through the doors, give them a tour and explain their vision to them.
